80,000 Hours
80,000 Hours released two blog posts answering readers’ career questions:
- Ask a career advisor: how to compete with AI models in the job market and whether to stay in the US government
- Ask a career advisor: how mid-career people can help with AI and how to survive a job hunt
On The 80,000 Hours Podcast, Rob is closely tracking updates on OpenAI’s attempt to ditch its nonprofit status, with two emergency podcast episodes:
- Judge plants a legal time bomb under OpenAI (with Rose Chan Loui)
- Elon tries to crash OpenAI’s party (with Rose Chan Loui)
Rob also interviewed Allan Dafoe on why technology is unstoppable & how to shape AI development anyway.
Anima International
Anima International published a new blog post by Keyvan Mostafavi (crossposted on the EA Forum). Keyvan details how his team in France made the difficult decision to shift from their successful meat-reduction program to a new mission of ending cages for egg-laying hens after evaluating where they could have a bigger impact.
The organisation also published a report on the plant-based food industry in Poland, detailing the data, challenges, and opportunities for growth in the sector.
As part of ongoing efforts to introduce a legislative fur farming ban in Poland, Anima International organised an action in front of the Polish Prime Minister’s office. They delivered 8,000 postcards calling for the ban, written by advocates, members of the public, and schoolchildren from across the country. This demonstration highlighted the widespread support for ending an industry responsible for enormous animal suffering. During the accompanying press conference, former British Fur Trade Association CEO Mike Moser – now an anti-fur advocate – also voiced his support for the proposed ban.
In Denmark, Anima International protested at a new McDonald’s location opening, calling attention to the company’s unfulfilled 2020 promise to stop using fast-growing chicken breeds. McDonald’s ranks at the bottom among the country’s major food companies in implementing meaningful animal welfare improvements. Anima International continues the work to ensure the company takes steps to address the suffering of millions of chickens in their supply chain.
Animal Advocacy Careers
Many believe working for an animal charity is the sole way to effect change, but powerful change-makers also exist outside nonprofits. Professionals in food companies, media, law, and academia are achieving significant victories for animals. If you hold a leadership role and possess diverse experience, consider completing the Adjacent roles survey.

Faunalytics
A new study from Faunalytics and Good Growth Co. explores Gen Z’s attitudes toward animals, climate, and activism across the US, Indonesia, Thailand, and China. Findings reveal strong preferences for eco-friendly products, scepticism about society’s efforts to protect animals and the environment, and a focus on companion and wild animals over farmed animals. The report also highlights key cultural differences, offering valuable insights.
Faunalytics is celebrating their 25th anniversary. Twenty-five years ago, two passionate grassroots activists set out to create lasting change for animals. They founded Faunalytics to leverage research and data to guide advocacy efforts, ensuring resources are directed where they can create the greatest impact for animals. Faunalytics has since grown and evolved alongside the advocacy community, continually adapting to meet its ever-changing needs.
Fish Welfare Initiative
As part of their ongoing R&D push, Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) recently published an update on their early-stage project to develop pre-slaughter stunning in India. They also continue to focus on their other R&D initiatives, such as feed fortification and the remote sensing of water quality. There are further updates on their blog.
