Great things to think about from this post.

Just noting my thoughts here. Will come back and think more:

  • Part of our meaning comes from making future humanity go well. We can do this by reducing extinction risks below a certain threshold and preventing 'lock-in' risks from our side.
  • Handing better moral values to future and reducing suffering matters and this is where it could meet with present short term actions.
  • Reducing short-term suffering and improving present lives matter. But this should be also done considering future generations in mind, otherwise we would be overfitting for present. (Example would be increasing greenhouse gases for current economic development to help the poorest but it would result in future harm).
  • My interpretation of longtermism is on the lines of increasing the best parts of humanity/current world to progress to future. It's about reaching our potential as well and utilizing time available to us well without causing pre-mature extinction all else being equal.
