In EA circles, it's commonly advised to "keep your identity small" so as not to feel threatened when it's challenged, allowing for a more objective pursuit of truth. On the other hand, I find it better to keep many strands to my identity. By doing so, I am less likely to feel overly threatened when any particular aspect of my identity is questioned. I think that having a rich sense of identity makes me more robust as a person as my identity feels less fragile. I also find it more realistic for me to include things like EA as part of my identity.
Fwiw, my impression is that within the EA community, endorsing a nonzero pure time preference is a minority reason why people don't agree with longtermism. Doubts about tractability seem much more important.
