The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union during October 1962 over the presence of Soviet nuclear-capable missiles in Cuba.  Arthur Schlesinger, the historian and former Kennedy aide, called it "the most dangerous confrontation in human history."
