EA Sheffield is excited to announce our first open discussion of semester 2.
We’ll be talking about the effectiveness of protests and try to answer questions like:
- When is civil disobedience ethically legitimate?
- Non-violent vs. violent protest - which is more effective?
- What’s the role of leaders in protesting?
- How should governments react?
Hope to see you there!

Will there be any way to access this event virtually/will it be recorded?
Hi Wim, we weren't planning on recording the session and haven't prepared for virtual access. If you're interested in attending our events virtually however we'll see what we can arrange in the future!
Thank you! I'm particularly interested in the effectiveness of civil disobedience in influencing institutional decision-making. If anyone took notes on this discussion and would be willing to share, I'd be incredibly grateful! If you plan on centering future events on this topic and are able to make them virtually accessible without too much hassle, I would love to attend them along with some of my friends. Of course, totally understand if not!
I would also be interested in any recordings or notes you have from this conversation! I've wondered whether protests work for years, and the answer seems complicated and I'd love some entry points or summaries!
